Reference Manual for the Model DG814 DSL Modem Internet Gateway
4-12 Basic Configuration of the Gateway
4. Gateway’s MAC Address:
This section determines the Ethernet MAC address that will be used by the gateway on the
Internet port. Some ISPs will register the Ethernet MAC address of the network interface card
in your PC when your account is first opened. They will then only accept traffic from the
MAC address of that PC. This feature allows your gateway to masquerade as that PC by
“cloning” its MAC address.
To change the MAC address, select “Use this Computers MAC address.” The gateway will
then capture and use the MAC address of the PC that you are now using. You must be using
the one PC that is allowed by the ISP. Or, select “Use this MAC address” and enter it.
5. ISP Parameters for Internet Access
MTU Size: The normal MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is
1500 Bytes. For PPPoE, the gateway adjusts the MTU size automatically to 1492 Bytes.
Changing this is rarely required, and should not be done unless you are sure it is necessary for
your ISP connection. Any packets sent through the gateway that are larger than the configured
MTU size will be repackaged into smaller packets to meet the MTU requirement. To change
the MTU size:
1. Under MTU Size, select Custom.
2. Enter a new size between 64 and 1500. For PPPoE, use 1492.
3. Click Apply to save the new configuration.
Multiplexing Method:
Your ISP will indicate whether your Multiplexing Method is VC-BASED or LLC-BASED and
which VPI and VCI is used. Enter the information in this screen. The most common
Multiplexing Method is LLC-based. If your service provider does not indicate which one is
used, use LLC-BASED.
Note: The Multiplexing Method and VPI/VCI combination has been preconfigured for your ISP.
You should not have to change these parameters.
Note: The Setup Wizard may be able to detect the VPI/VCI configuration automatically, in which
case the values will be relected in the VPI/VCI field.
4. Click on Apply, then proceed to “Completing the Configuration“ on page 4-12.
Completing the Configuration
Click on the Test button to test your Internet connection. If the NETGEAR website does not
appear within one minute, refer to
Chapter 7, “Troubleshooting”.
